As time goes by

People don’t wear watches as much as they used to. With clocks on smart phones – and nearly every digital surface – they’re no longer a necessity to tell time. They’re now a form of decoration, a mechanical piece of jewellery. But, while there are plenty of options for the fashion conscious, from mass market brands to high-end designer ones, there are few that offer both style and substance at a reasonable price.

Based in Southern California, Jorg Gray designs a range of watches that reflects an effortless American aesthetic, meant to be worn by men and women, of any age, at any time. Originally manufactured as a high end promotional item for corporations and federal agencies in 1998, Jorg Gray only became available at retailers in 2009 and has expanded ever since.

There are collections for everyone: Classic (can easily transition from the board room to black tie events); Signature (understated style, with date displays, three-hand and chronograph functions); Chronographs (analog displays with stopwatch capabilities); Sports (rugged faces with durable silicone-rubber straps); and Limited Edition (only 1,000 are produced).

Although most watch wearers choose a traditional design for work and something fashion forward for play, when it comes to government officials, their daily demands require something in the middle. A prime example: the JG6500 model is worn by the Secret Service, with President Obama receiving one in 2007 as a birthday gift from his Secret Service detail and shortly thereafter, resulting in Jorg Gray creating a commemorative edition of the timepiece (with an individualized serial number and an inscription, laser engraved on the case back), capitalizing on its popularity. The brand is so well-liked amongst management that government agencies around the world, including the London Metropolitan Police, also wear Jorg Gray watches.

But Jorg Gray’s fans aren’t only presidential. The brand had several brand ambassadors, including MotoGP and former WorldBike Champion Ben Spies, US international and Tottenham soccer player Clint Dempsey, Indy500 racer Alex Tagliani, as well as the US cycling team, Elbows Elite Cycling, and in May 2014, Jorg Gray partnered with young California racing star Connor De Phillippi, the lone American in the Porsche Motorsport Junior Programme.

By continually challenging themselves by reinventing the timepiece, their end goal is to produce watches that feature a fresh take on classic designs, coupled with thoughtful details and fine finishes.

And if it’s good enough for a President of the United States…
