From the hip hop music on set to the vintage playboy magazines stacked in the corner and his rippling abs, it’s safe to say we had a pretty great photo shoot with Ryan Guzman. The Texas-born stud is set to be the lead in the Richard Linklater film, Everybody Wants Some. From his love of martial arts to his close relationship with his family, working with Jennifer Lopez and his upcoming ventures, Guzman revealed all to BELLO.

BELLO: Do you enjoy doing photo shoots?

RYAN GUZMAN: Photo shoots are always a little awkward for me because I’m not doing something. I’m trying to look a certain way, but it’s always fun with Bello. I’ve always had a good time. It’s uplifting, light, and easy.

B: As well as acting you also do mixed martial arts fighting. How did that come about?

RG: When I was 7 years old I started fighting. I got my black belt when I was 10 in Taekwondo, and I fell in love – I wanted to become Bruce Lee. So I continue to do it now even though I’m an actor. There’s something about martial arts that gives me freedom.

B: So you actually made an appearance in Pretty Little Liars as a martial arts instructor with your co-star Lucy Hale. How was that?

RG: I really did. Lucy’s always fun. She’s actually a friend of mine. More so than anything, the crew itself was fun to work with. Jill, the boom operator, everybody that I met, I made sure I had a good relationship with. I got excited going to work everyday.

B: Judging from your social media you seem to be really close with your family. What was their reaction when you told them you wanted to become an actor?

RG: They were so happy that I wasn’t going to fight anymore. It was hard for them to come to my fights. I remember when I decided I wanted to become a professional fighter and they tried to talk me out of it. Then a couple years later I decided to move out to LA and just the smile on their faces. They were like ‘please, do whatever you want just don’t fight anymore, please!’

B: Is your younger brother Steven in the business too?

RG: No he goes to UC Davis and plays soccer. Our family’s very athletic, very competitive. Any time I go home, we’re always competing about something, whether its checkers or eating fast.

B: Last year you starred opposite the incredible Jennifer Lopez. What was the experience like working alongside her?

RG: I thought it was going to be daunting. I thought it was going to be a lot to take in, but again Rob Cohen was an amazing director. We always had a good conversation of where the character should be and because he made it so easy to collaborate with, I could feel free about getting crazy or going a little deeper with the character. Working with Jennifer was obviously incredible.

B: So do you have any other upcoming projects that you want to talk about?

RG: I have a movie coming out in April, Everybody wants some, by Richard Linklater. It’s a 1980’s comedy, spiritual sequel, amazing director, incredible. That’s why he won a golden globe. I mean I worked with such an amazing person, it was so eye opening. I was just taking notes silently in the corner. Comedy is very scary, especially when you have 10 other guys competing to be the funniest. It’s probably one of the best things I have ever been a part of and will ever be a part of. I know I’m very, very early in my career, but it was just one of those indescribable experiences.
