Lenses ready! Capture stunning photos of the epic ‘Pink Moon’ in April

The full Pink Moon peaks near the end of the month on Sunday, April 29, at 8:58 p.m. EDT, offering a glorious view for evening skywatchers in the eastern U.S. For the lucky stargazers in New York City, the full moon will rise at 7:31 p.m. EDT. The moon and sun will share the sky for a very short time as the sun sets over New York around 20 minutes after moonrise.

What makes the Pink moon so special is that the name derives from one of the first spring flowers, Wild Ground Phlox, also known as Moss Phlox. These vibrant flowers are native to North America and often bloom around the time of April’s Full Moon.

The moon is the largest and brightest object in our night sky and has enchanted and inspired mankind for centuries. The different full moons all have unique names because the early Native Americans didn’t record time using months of the Julian or Gregorian calendar. Instead tribes gave each full moon a nickname to keep track of the seasons and lunar months.

This January we saw two Wolf Moons, with the second one being dubbed a Super Blue Blood Moon. It’s named a Wolf Moon because villagers used to hear packs of wolves howling into the night. February sometimes misses out on a full moon due to it being a short month. However, when we are graced with the lunar presence in this month, it is known as the Snow Moon, named because historically it has always been the snowiest month in America.

Again, in March skywatchers were in for a treat with two full moons. Worm Moon comes from the fact that as temperatures rise earthworm casts begin to appear and birds begin finding food.
